Pathway to Medical School

See www.kiaorahauora.co.nz : this is an excellent resource for anyone considering a career in medicine.

What should I study at high school?

It’s recommended you take chemistry, biology and physics in Year 12 and 13 to help you gain entry to medical school.

How do I apply to study medicine?

Medical degrees are offered through the Medical Schools at Auckland and Otago Universities. Otago University Faculty of Medicine has campuses in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington.

Check the Medical Schools' current entry requirements, and how to apply:

Otago University Faculty of Medicine
Auckland Unversity Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences

Do I need to know what type of doctor I want to be when I apply to medical school?

You won’t be expected to make a definite career choice until you reach the house surgeon level of your training, after your 6th year at Medical School.

See the Medical Specialties section for more information.
