It’s recommended you take Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Calculus or Statistics, and English at a Year 13 level to help you get into medical school.
Medical degrees are offered through the Medical Schools at Auckland and Otago Universities. Otago University Faculty of Medicine has campuses in Dunedin, Christchurch and Wellington.

This report contains career profiles of Māori working in the health sector or studying towards a health related qualification to showcase potential career pathways for those wishing to enter a health profession.
The report also summarises factors that facilitate and hinder the recruitment of Māori in the health workforce.


The Medical Council undertook a survey last year to find out why doctors chose to leave New Zealand and what might encourage them to return. Approximately 55 percent of doctors who were invited to participate in the survey completed it, with a total of 182 surveys completed.
